Preference center

Also known as: subscription preferences · email preferences

A user-facing page where subscribers can choose which types of email they receive, how frequently, and on what topics — reduces unsubscribe rate vs all-or-nothing by letting users throttle instead of leaving entirely.

A preference center is a page (usually accessed via a link in every email footer) where subscribers can manage their subscription: opt out of specific email categories, change frequency, update topic interests, or unsubscribe entirely. Well-designed preference centers reduce unsubscribe rate by 15-40% because users who would have clicked unsubscribe instead reduce frequency or narrow topic scope. Minimum design: list email categories with clear descriptions, allow per-category opt-out, provide a global unsubscribe option, and honour List-Unsubscribe requests from the same UI. Over-designing the preference center (15 toggles, tier systems, progressive profiling) usually backfires — users leave rather than navigate complexity. Three to six categories with clear labels is the sweet spot.
